What metadata is hidden in your photos

GPS location data

Photos from phones embed your exact GPS coordinates. Remove them before sharing photos publicly to protect your location privacy.

Camera information

EXIF stores camera model, serial number, lens type, and settings. Strip these to prevent device fingerprinting.

Timestamps

Creation date, modification date, and even timezone data are embedded in photos. Remove timestamps for anonymity.

Privacy protection

Social media strips some EXIF data, but not all platforms do. Always strip metadata yourself before uploading to any website.

Why stripping EXIF data matters

Every photo taken with a smartphone or digital camera contains hidden metadata called EXIF data. This includes your exact GPS location, camera model and serial number, the date and time the photo was taken, and even the software used to edit it. When you share these photos online, all of this information goes with them.

While some social media platforms strip EXIF data on upload, many websites, forums, and messaging apps do not. Anyone who downloads your photo can extract this metadata and potentially determine where you live, what devices you use, and when you were at a specific location. This is a serious privacy concern, especially for photos shared publicly.

Our tool strips metadata by re-drawing the image through a Canvas element, which inherently discards all non-pixel data. The visual content is preserved at maximum quality — your photo looks identical, just without the hidden tracking information. As a bonus, removing metadata can also reduce file size slightly.

Frequently asked questions

What is EXIF data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in image files by cameras and phones. It can include GPS coordinates, camera model, serial number, date/time, lens info, ISO speed, aperture, shutter speed, software used, and more.

What metadata gets removed?

All metadata is removed — EXIF, IPTC, XMP, GPS coordinates, camera info, timestamps, software info, and any other non-pixel data. The tool re-draws the image through a Canvas element, which inherently discards everything except the visual pixels.

Does stripping metadata affect image quality?

The visual content is preserved at maximum quality. JPEG images are re-saved at 100% quality to minimize any compression artifacts. PNG and WebP formats use lossless encoding. The image looks identical, just without the hidden metadata.

What image formats are supported?

We support JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP. JPEG photos from cameras and phones typically have the most EXIF data (GPS, camera info, settings). PNG and WebP files may also contain metadata.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device. This is especially important for a privacy tool — your photos stay completely private.
