Rename files in bulk
Give hundreds of files new names at once: random, numbered, by the date a photo was taken, or from your own pattern. Preview every name, then download them as one ZIP. Tick Anonymize to also strip the location, camera and author hidden inside photos and PDFs. Everything runs in your browser.

Pattern tokens
Choose Custom and mix these with your own text. For example, trip-{n} gives trip-01.jpg, trip-02.jpg, and {date}_{name} gives 2024-06-12_IMG_0042.jpg. The extension is always kept.
| Token | Becomes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| {name} | The current name, without its extension | IMG_0042 |
| {n} | A counter, padded to the same width for every file | 01, 02 … 12 |
| {n:3} | A counter with a fixed number of digits | 001, 002 |
| {date} | The date a photo was taken (EXIF), or the file’s last-modified date | 2024-06-12 |
| {time} | The time, from the same source | 09-41-00 |
| {random} | Ten random letters and digits; {random:16} for sixteen | k7m2xq9fbd |
How to rename many files at once
File names say more than people expect. A phone photo called IMG_20240612_094100.jpg tells anyone when it was taken, and documents are often named after a person, a client or a project. Renaming before you share fixes that; numbering puts a batch in a clean order for a portal or a print shop.
Names that would clash get -2, -3 added, characters that Windows or macOS reject are replaced, and very long names are shortened. Files inside folders keep their folders. To see everything else a file gives away, open it in the metadata viewer.
- 1Drop your files. Add any files: photos, PDFs, documents, videos. They stay in your browser.
- 2Pick a naming scheme. Choose random names, numbers, the date taken or your own pattern, and check the preview of every new name.
- 3Download. Download the renamed files as one ZIP, or one by one. Tick Anonymize to strip hidden metadata at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. The files are renamed and zipped by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, which you can check in your browser’s Network tab.
Why do I get a ZIP instead of renamed files in my folder?
Websites can’t rename files on your disk. The tool gives you renamed copies instead: one ZIP with all of them (files are stored, not recompressed, so it’s quick), or the files downloaded one by one. Your originals are untouched.
How do I rename photos by the date they were taken?
Choose Date taken. Each photo is named from the date and time in its EXIF data, like 2024-06-12_09-41-00.jpg. Files without that date use their last-modified date. Two photos taken in the same second get -2, -3 added.
Can I give files random names?
Yes. Random gives every file an unguessable name of 10 letters and digits (6 to 32 if you change the length), keeping its extension. Shuffle makes new ones. Letters that look alike, such as l, o, 0 and 1, aren’t used.
What does Anonymize do?
Besides renaming, it removes hidden metadata from photos and PDFs (GPS location, camera, author, software, dates) without re-saving them, and gives every file in the ZIP the same date, so the archive doesn’t reveal when each file was made.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. On phones you can also share the renamed files straight to another app instead of downloading them.
